Kamiak too much for Meadowdale

For the second week in a row, the Meadowdale defense struggled to defend the pass.

Kamiak quarterback Gary Rogers threw for four touchdowns to lead the Knights to a decisive 38-14 victory over the Mavericks in a Western Conference 4A South Division matchup Sept. 27 at Edmonds Stadium.

In addition to problems on defense, the Meadowdale offense didn’t make the most of its scoring opportunities, according to coach Mark Stewart.

The Mavericks, who were without running back Kyle Duffy, failed to come away with any points on two occasions when they were inside the Kamiak 20.

While two touchdowns wouldn’t have changed the final result, they could have altered the complexion of the game.

Duffy was held out of the game after suffering a concussion against Mountlake Terrace a week earlier. Stewart was hopeful that his senior standout would be back this week.

“It’s a tough league,” Stewart said. “We’ve got to keep working hard. I think we’re going to be OK.”

After taking a 13-0 first quarter lead, Wilson riddled the Meadowdale secondary for 46- and 34-yard touchdown passes in the second quarter. One touchdown was the result of blown coverage and on the other the defender simply got beat.

“Our pass defense has not been great,” Stewart said. “We’re giving up too many yards and we’re not getting stops when we really need to.”

Meadowdale (2-1 in the league and overall) will try to regroup against Mariner in a 7:30 p.m. game tonight (Friday, Oct. 4) at Goddard Stadium.

Stewart isn’t surprised that six teams are tied for first place in the division with 2-1 records.

“It (league) is pretty even,” Stewart said. “Everybody can get beat.”
