Cheryl Richey unveils her latest series of abstract mixed media paintings entitled “Portals of Light” in an exhibit now on display at Edmonds’ Kindred Circle Art Gallery.
Each piece contains a portal as a reminder of the doors through which we pass in our life journey. Richey says her artistic journey is grounded in a desire to experiment with ways to explore and understand nature’s mysteries and wisdom — including her own. The “Portals of Light” series has been several years in the making, and reflects the many portals, or openings, that appear before us as we go through life. Sometimes the portal is an entrance into something new. Sometimes it is an exit. It might be a refuge, or perhaps an escape. It may feel bright and cheerful, or dark and moody.
A retired University of Washington professor of Social Work, Richey was fully tenured and published. She has written haiku poetry for years and finds that many of her paintings are like haiku in that they strive to capture and communicate simple but fundamental truths of nature. Most of her work focuses on place. “When I create these places,” Richey said, “I am in the space and I enjoy every moment of this magical sojourn.”
Meet Richey in person when she demonstrates her techniques from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1 at Kindred. She will be demonstrating her unusual approach to applying paint and texture to paper or canvas.
The exhibit runs through April 19 at Kindred Circle Art Gallery, located at 409 Main Street in downtown Edmonds. More information is available at 435-776-3778 or www.KindredCircle.com.
