The Lynnwood football team faced a major challenge in last week’s game against Kamiak.
Though the Knights kept their unbeaten record intact with a 49-7 thrashing, the Royals battled to the end and made a strong impression on their coach in the Western Conference South Division clash Oct. 1 at Goddard Stadium.
“The kids played extremely hard for four quarters,” said Lynnwood coach Andrew Burton. “I feel just fortunate to have such a great opportunity to work with such great men. I love coaching them. I wouldn’t trade them for anybody. They’re just a great group.”
The Knights were led by quarterback Mark Iddins, who threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Thomas Callandret, who rushed for 93 yards and a pair of TDs.
Lynnwood (0-5) takes on another team winless team in district rival Mountlake Terrace (0-5) at 5 p.m. tonight (Friday, Oct. 8) at Edmonds Stadium.
“It could be a great game,” Burton said. “Terrace is a great team. (Coach Tony) Umayam has got them on the right track. It will be a great contest for us.”
The Royals’ lone touchdown was a 3-yard run by sophomore quarterback Gilbert Martin.
One of the goals Lynnwood had coming into the Kamiak contest was to fine tune its defense. For the most part, Burton said the Royals accomplished their goals.
“We did align well on defense,” said Burton. “We played four quarters on defense … The most progress has been I would say probably defensively. We’re starting to play as a team. The senior leadership is very strong right now.”
Burton cited wide receiver Brian Hill and running back Luke St. Marie as two players, who have stepped up on-and-off the field.
The rest of the players’ spirits are high despite the team’s on the field struggles.
“The kids are extremely up,” Burton said. “It’s just exciting to be playing football the way it’s meant to be.”
