It might have been her first sanctioned bout but Christina Kwan talks like a ring veteran.
The 21-year-old Shorecrest High School graduate lost her only match by decision at the second annual Ringside National Championships amateur boxing tournament Sept. 1 in Kansas City.
She’s since examined the footage of her 95-pound championship fight several times over and insists she outperformed 17-year-old Holly Shores.
“A lot of people who reviewed the tape thought I won the fight,” Kwan said. “She was really aggressive … but I was slipping in some shots.”
In the first round, Kwan’s feet got tangled up and she dropped to the mat for a split-second. The referee thought a punch prompted the fall and rather than ruling it a slip, gave Kwan a standing eight-count.
After about the first 30 seconds of each of the three two-minute rounds, Kwan sensed her opponent grew tired.
“She’d take a breather and that’s when I came in with my right,” Kwan said.
But when she had chances to become the aggressor, Kwan didn’t capitalize.
“I got the openings,” she said. “But I could have leveraged my shots better.”
