Richmond Beach has a big weekend of events planned May 4 and 5 with the 41st annual Richmond Beach Library Open House and Arts and Crafts Show. The Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival runs concurrently on May 5 in Richmond Beach Community Park, adjoining the library.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Richmond Beach Library, proceeds from the library show will support programming at the Richmond Beach Library.
The festival features local artists who will display their crafts, paintings and pottery for enjoyment and purchase. Friday night features music by the Shorewood High School String Quartet, and Saturday will feature a book sale. There will be hands-on art activities for kids, and prizes will also be raffled during the festival.
June Pattenaude, former Richmond Beach librarian from 1956 to 1979, and Judy Odell, a professional artist and Richmond Beach resident, began the show with the Friends 41 years ago to help raise funds for the library and increase art awareness in the community. Residents Joe and Eve Phillips, Betty Baer-Kaas and Tom Olson were also instrumental in helping with the show. Today the Philipses continue to lend a hand in the organizing of the event.
In 1986 Odell, who lived in Richmond Beach for 42 years, created and donated a painting titled “Narcissus and Daffodils” to the Friends of the Richmond Beach Library Art show raffle. Odell would like to photograph the painting raffled in 1986 to create a giclee, a type of high quality print, to add to her body of work. If you know where the painting is, call the Richmond Beach Library at 206-546-3636 to contact Odell.
This year, Odell has donated another giclee for a silent auction titled “Summer Bouquet.” A machine pieced and sewn quilt titled “Fishing with Mermaids” will also be auctioned.
