A robotics team from King’s High School in Shoreline, which includes team members from Lynnwood, Edmonds and Woodway, will head to Atlanta in April for the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship.
The team took first place at the state competition held Dec. 12 at Bellevue High School. In all, 32 high school teams competed.
The winning team members are juniors John Bjorge of Edmonds, Emmett Lam of Bothell and Kevin Pringle of Seattle; sophomores Randall Ersoz of Woodway, Faith Gleason of Edmonds, Natalie Kim of Lynnwood, Ryan Printz of Lynnwood and Kaysee-Li Tomkins of Seattle; and freshman Jack Kim of Mukilteo. Team coach Mikel Thompson is assisted by mentors Michael Pringle and Dale Hui.
Among other local teams, Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center’s Ro-Bros Team competed for the first time and placed 13th.
Also that weekend, students ages 9 to 14 competed in the FIRST Lego League robotics state tournament.
Heatherwood Middle School’s Hawk Bots team placed third.
Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center’s Team Locomotion earned the Team Spirit Award, and their robot performed in the top 10.
Niyon Zoo from Alderwood Middle School took second place for the Teamwork Award.
Both tournaments are part of FIRST, a New Hampshire-based nonprofit that stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.”
Students, staff reach out to help
Students and staff across the Edmonds School District reached into their pantries and pockets in the weeks leading up to winter break to help those less fortunate.
Terrace Park School in Mountlake Terrace collected more than 115 large boxes of nonperishable food items for the Concern for Neighbors Food Bank.
Students in the auto shop class at Meadowdale High School also made a sizable donation to the food bank of more than 2,000 items.
Meanwhile, bus drivers in the district’s transportation department pulled together gift donations to give to each of the more than 90 homeless students served in district schools.
LHS students donate blood
Nearly 300 students at Lynnwood High School donated blood during a recent drive at their school for the Puget Sound Blood Center. According to the blood center, it takes 800 donors each day statewide to keep the blood supply at a safe level, and on this particular day, Lynnwood students supplied more than 25 percent of the day’s needed donations.
