Everett City Councilman Ron Gipson was elected president of the Snohomish County chapter of the NAACP at a special meeting this week.

State Rep. John Lovick, D-Mill Creek, and Snohomish County Judge Eric Lucas also are among the chapter’s new leadership.

Gipson was the only candidate who faced opposition in the election, said Luis Moscoso, a member of the chapter’s now-dissolved Organizing Committee.

Janice Greene ran against Gipson for the presidential slot but was elected to the chapter’s five-member board instead.

The positions of treasurer and assistant secretary remain open, Moscoso said.

The newly elected officials will travel to an NAACP training conference in Oregon next month.

Gipson said the chapter has yet to determine what its top issues will be.

“We’ll look at everybody,” he said. “We’ll look at the county, at the school districts, as well as city government.”

Gipson is joined by Vice President Monica Bibbs, Secretary Marvetta Toler and Assistant Treasurer Alvin Moore.

Lovick, Lucas, Greene, Moscoso and J.J. Frank make up the executive committee.

An NAACP chapter formed in Snohomish County in 1989 but disbanded in 2000 because of a lack of interest.

The Snohomish County chapter received official recognition early this year, when more than 100 signatures were gathered in favor of starting the local chapter.
