A Lynnwood man drowned at McCollum Park Pool despite rescue efforts by lifeguards and paramedics.

It is believed to be the first drowning at the outdoor public pool since it opened in 1971, said Snohomish County Parks and Recreation Director Ron Martin.

John Christian Moen, 20, died July 12 at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

Moen died of asphyxia due to drowning. His death has been ruled an accident, the medical examiner said.

A lifeguard spotted Moen at the bottom of the diving board end of the pool about 5 p.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

A lifeguard brought Moen up from the water and began CPR, Martin said.

Paramedics arrived and continued life-saving efforts as they took him to Stevens Hospital, where he died.

Moen was at the pool with family members and a church group, Hynes said.

He had a history of seizures, according to Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen.

No one witnessed him go to the bottom of the pool, Jorgensen said. It isn’t clear how long he was in the water.

There were no signs of trauma, she said.

Four lifeguards were watching the pool at the time of the accident, Martin said.

Nearly 140 people were inside the pool area. Not everyone was swimming, Martin said.

The pool was open Tuesday, July 13.
