LYNNWOOD

Federated Department stores, the national retail giant that owns Macy’s, will add 26,000 square feet of retail space to its Alderwood Mall store beginning this year.

City staff briefed the City Council during a Jan. 22 work session at City Hall.

Plans call for extending the main part of the store with a single story structure that continues 75 feet to the south, into the existing surface parking lot. The 180,000 square foot store sits on the south side of the mall.

“My understanding is the entire first floor will be re-merchandised,” said the mall’s general manager, Jerry Alder.

According to a city memo, city planning staff liked the proposed design for the store addition but requested that the developer add vegetation on the east and west sides of the store, which do not have display windows.

The expansion should be well under way by September and complete by early 2009, Alder said, adding that the project will be followed by the mall’s construction of a third parking garage beginning in 2009. The new garage will be connected to Macy’s and Sears.

Today, two parking garages connect to the mall: a north deck, which connects to Nordstrom and J.C. Penney and a second garage that connects only to J.C. Penney.

“This will really help our parking in the future because currently, most of the parking is on the west side of our property,” Alder said. “By having this third parking garage on the east side, it’ll balance things out better.”
