Edmonds City Councilman Richard Marin was elected chairman of the Community Transit Board of Directors Nov. 2. Marin will serve out the remainder of the term vacated by Lake Stevens Mayor Lynn Walty, who resigned his elected post effective Nov. 3.

Marin, who relies on bus service for commuting to and from his Seaview-area home, has served as an alternate or board member on the Community Transit Board since 2001 and was vice chair the past two years. He is in his second term on the Edmonds City Council.

As a Community Transit Board member, Marin was selected by Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon last year to be one of the county’s three representatives on the Sound Transit Board of Directors.

Marin is a retired captain in the U. S. Navy, a Vietnam veteran and a retired advertising professional. To those who follow Edmonds City Council cable-television broadcasts, Marin’s enthusiasm for real-life experiences, whether that means riding on a garbage truck or piloting a bus to gain first-hand knowledge, is well known.

“I am thrilled to be in a position to lead people to think about using transit,” said Marin. “In the last few years I’ve tried to see if I can make a transit trip possible before reaching for my car keys. It’s something everyone in Snohomish County should try, at least once.”

Also elected to board officer positions were Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall, who was elected vice chair and Brier City Councilmember Carlton Gipson, who was elected secretary. All three officers will serve until a new officer election in February 2007.
