EDMONDS — Eric Marty probably didn’t see his two touchdown passes in Meadowdale’s 14-7 Western Conference 4A South Division come-from-behind win over Shorewood last week.
His view was obscured all night by Shorewood’s remorseless linemen and linebackers, who laid some vicious hits on the senior quarterback, knocking him to the turf throughout the Oct. 31 contest at Edmonds Stadium.
But Marty still delivered the goods.
“Marty’s a leader,” junior Jake Linton said. “He pumps everybody up. He doesn’t get on anybody. He just shakes off (the hits) and tells the linemen to get their man.”
When their attempt at establishing the ground game proved futile — Meadowdale netted zero rushing yards in a sloppy and scoreless first half — Marty and the Mavericks came out throwing after halftime.
Marty completed just one of his four passes in the first half and was intercepted in the end zone on third-and-goal, but bounced back with an impeccable second-half performance to finish 10 of 17 for 190 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior Justin Lucero grabbed Marty’s first touchdown pass at the 2:23 mark of the third quarter, sliding in front of his defender for a 9-yard reception to help the Mavericks (5-3 in the league, 5-4 overall) even the score at 7.
The Thunderbirds (4-4, 5-4) had taken a 7-0 lead on Grant Boudon’s 81-yard punt return touchdown — his second in as many weeks — after Meadowdale’s opening possession of the second half stalled near midfield.
Shorewood kicker Taylor Griffith missed a go-ahead 25-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter and the T-birds didn’t get past the Meadowdale 45-yard line the rest of the night.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Marty hit Linton mid-stride for a 48-yard gain down to the Shorewood 27 and two plays later the two hooked up again for a 23-yard, game-winning touchdown with 4:55 remaining.
“It looked like Marty kind of overthrew it,” Linton said, “but he got it right in between the two defenders and I caught it and ran it in.”
Linton clinched Meadowdale’s second consecutive win by picking off Shorewood quarterback Sean Tracey with 11 seconds to go. Tracey was six of 17 for 109 yards and Seth Setterberg led the T-birds with 130 yards on 28 carries.
Already assured of a return trip to the Northwest District 3A playoffs, the Mavericks took over sole possession of fourth place in the division with the win.
Meadowdale was scheduled to close out the regular season last night against Lynnwood and will face the Northwest 3A League’s third-place finisher in a state-qualifying game Nov. 11.
