If experience translates into success, then the Meadowdale boys golf team is primed for a strong run in 2004.

The Mavericks are led by junior Jonathan Keane, who advanced to the Class 3A state tournament last season. Keane is looking to improve upon his 13th place finish.

“He hits the ball a long ways and his iron play is excellent,” Meadowdale coach Dean Wiley said.

The rest of the Mavericks’ lineup features four seniors — Casey Mummy, Jeff Larson, Casey Hoffman and R.J. Lacount. The sixth spot is currently being held by freshman Thomas Horgan.

All four seniors are close in skills and may move back and forth.

“They’re great kids. They’re neat to be around,” Wiley said. “They are kind of the glue to our team … we’ve got some solid players top to bottom.”

While Meadowdale is packed with veterans, Edmonds-Woodway is fielding a relatively young lineup. Among the Warriors’ top players are senior Scott Cunningham, junior Devon Schmaus and sophomore Bryce Beach.

Sophomores Rob Shandil and Ross Hyde also have impressed Edmonds-Woodway coach Tom Davis with their enthusiasm for the game and their skills.

“They have a lot of potential,” Davis said.

Lynnwood is coming off one of its most successful seasons. The Royals took seventh place overall at the Class 3A state tournament last year.

Last season’s success generated some interest resulting in a full 13-member varsity/ junior varsity squad.

The Royals’ top prospects are Ricardo Aguayo and Mike Olson.

“Both are really strong players,” said Lynnwood coach Chris Huddleson. “Both competed in the second round of districts, which is usually a tough place to be. Both have a good opportunity to go to state.”

Another experienced player is T.J. Dahlen with the rest of the varsity team composed of newcomers Chris Olson, Kris Jackson and Chris Matzen.

“This is rebuilding year,” Huddleson said. “But half of (the players) are pretty strong.”

Mountlake Terrace returns its most experienced and talented lineups in coach Doug Porter’s three-year tenure. Six players are back including four-year varsity players James Rothenberger and Ryan Jeffery. Both played at last year’s district tournament and should be contenders again this season.

Seniors Jordan Morrison and Darren Harnois are three year varsity players.

“I’m pleasantly surprised so far,” Porter said. “This is by far the deepest team I’ve ever had … this is a really outstanding team for Terrace.”
