Meadowdale duo captures NW District doubles championship

BELLINGHAM – Meadowdale, led by the championship doubles team of Whitney Frank and Tanya Subcleff, won the Class 3A Northwest District girls tennis championship May 23 at Sehome High School.

“The team showed incredible mental toughness,” coach Mark Schneider said. “They made great adjustments in matches to overcome being down in the first set in several matches.”

Frank and Subcleff won three matches during the course of the tournament, including a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sara and Tara Ireland of Sedro-Woolley in the final, to qualify for this weekend’s state meet at the University of Washington’s Nordstrom Tennis Center.

In the Class 4A Northwest District meet, Kamiak’s Katie Arnestad captured the singles championship with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Everett’s Jackie Mills. Mills earned a state berth by winning her semifinal match, which was suspended May 22, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 over Alexandra Platis, Platis came back through the consolation bracket to finish third and earn a state berth.

Elizabeth Currey and Lauren Mickels of Stanwood won the doubles championship. They’ll be joined at state by the runnersup Teresa Fish and Shannon Herman of Monroe and the third-place team of Ashley Wagner and Carissa Clark of Edmonds-Woodway.
