Central Washington University music student Taryn Zickefoose, a graduate of Meadowdale High School, received the $1,000 Young Musician Scholarship from Ellensburg’s Jazz in the Valley Music Festival.
A transfer student to CWU’s jazz studies program, Zickefoose has studied jazz since the seventh grade. She has participated in the top jazz choir and band at Point Loma University in San Diego and at Mount Hood Community College in Portland. As a member of CWU’s jazz choirs, she has traveled to the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Jazz Education Network Conference in New Orleans.
Zickefoose is pursuing a double major in percussion performance and special education. She maintains a 3.7 GPA and hopes to pursue a master’s degree in music therapy. As a music therapist, she will use her skills to help special-needs students.
“Not only has jazz taught me how to look outside the normal structure of music and to be creative in how I express myself, but it has also taught me how to work with other people,” Zickefoose said in a college press release.
