Just as forward Tara Jacob returned from injury to the Meadowdale girls basketball team, the Mavericks received an equalizing blow.
Undefeated Meadowdale will find out this week the severity of post Quinn Brewe’s knee injury. The Mavericks leading scorer and rebounder sustained an injury to her medial collateral ligament in last week’s 83-43 victory over Everett.
“We got Tara back this week, so we had to lose somebody else,” Meadowdale coach Karen Blair said. “I guess that’s how those percentages work.”
Depending on what tests reveal this week, Brewe could be out for as little as a few weeks or as long as the rest of the season.
Losing the 6-foot-1 junior for the year would likely reduce the chances of the Mavericks (7-0 in the Western Conference 4A South Division, 8-0 overall) winning their second Class 3A state title in three seasons.
As Brewe was positioning herself for a potential offensive rebound, an Everett player took a charge from Mavericks guard Jacci Baker. The Everett player fell backward and took Brewe out at the knees.
Blair said Brewe’s position will likely be filled by several players, including Jacob, Ashleigh Graham and Brewe’s freshman sister, Maggie Brewe.
“She does a lot for us,” Blair said. “Scoring, rebounding, creating some steals and blocking shots along with her court presence and leadership. We’ve got a huge hole to fill for a while. Hopefully it’s not for a long time.”
