Arnie Moreno is the new Shorewood boys tennis coach replacing Corliss Liekkio who resigned after 10 years as head coach.
Moreno, a physical education teacher at Shorewood, also coaches the wrestling and girls tennis teams at the school.
Liekkio decided to step down in part because of a job change. She previously worked as a registration secretary at Sunset Elementary, which the School Board voted to close next year to save money in the budget. Her new job at Brookside Elementary starts later with school dismissing at 3:30 p.m. when practice usually starts.
“Time-wise it just wasn’t going to work out since they don’t get out until 3:30,” she said.
Liekkio said she also has new grandchildren on the way and that went into her decision as well.
Liekkio, who also coached the girls team at Shorewood for five years, said the players will be in good hands with Moreno. She enjoyed coaching the athletes that came through the program while she was there.
“I just hope I had a positive impact on the kids I helped. I hope they gained life skills,” she said. “Not only were they good athletes but they were good people and fun to work with — fun, active, exciting, respectful, kids. It was always fun to win some matches. It was neat to see their growth over the years.”
Liekkio, who plays on five different tennis teams herself, hopes to get out on the court more, but she’ll miss the guys.
“It’s going to be a little different without practice to go to in August,” said Liekkio. “It was a good run and we had fun.”
