With Mother’s Day just around the corner, nine artists have been invited to envision the concept of Mothering in their medium. Edmonds fine craft gallery Manya Vee Selects wanted to find a creative way to enjoy this annual holiday, as well as create a special challenge for some of the artists they represent.

Some of the artists are mothers, and some are even grandmothers. Some are not mothers, but they are daughters. Certainly, all artists have had non-biological mothers nurture them in various ways throughout their lives. The challenge: create a new work of art with the concept of Mothering in mind. Then, write a short paragraph explaining why certain materials were chosen, and how that vision captures the concept.

The public has the opportunity to meet the artists and view these new works of art while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and beverages. at an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 7 and again Sunday afternoon, May 10.

New works include a photo montage by Edmonds artist Patricia Brier; glass and metal sculpture by Shirley Erickson; mosaic by Angie Heinrich, sculptural pottery by Barry McAlister and Jessica Wilkinson; stained glass by Lynette Schmidt and Tammy Grether; mixed media assemblage by Michelle Fokos; painting by Chris Romine; and metalsmithing by Sarah Gascoigne.

All works created for this exhibition will be on display at Manya Vee Selects for the entire month of May.
