MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission has awarded the Mountlake Terrace Police Department a $65,000 grant to improve school zones for eight different schools throughout the city, according to Police Chief Scott Smith.
The police department has been working together with the traffic engineer and the public works department in the development of a work plan to make the improvements, which will consist of the following: Adding high visibility fluorescent yellow panels to crosswalk signs, improving striping and painting of the road, adding push-button-activated lighted sign faces at the cross walk on 56th at 226th, along with push-button-activated pavement lights in the road near the high school at 220th and 44th and by Cedarway Elementary at 223rd and 44th, Smith said. Also, lighted sign faces will be added to crosswalks that are not signalized and reflectors added along with new vests and flags for safety patrols in the schools.
The funding will also be used to pay for the labor costs of the public works department to make these changes, Smith said.
Within the next two months staff will be asking for City Council approval to formally accept the grant funds.
