The Gallery at the Shoreline Center features the beauty of the natural world with watercolors by Charlette Haugen and Charlotte Wallace, pastels by Cheryl Hufnagel and photography by Jon Schmidt now through March 7.

Charlette Haugen recently decided to focus full time on her artistic endeavors. “I am still learning about the infinite variety of techniques used in watercolor and find that medium to be the most rewarding and thus my highest priority,” she said. Haugen’s work tends to revolve around the outdoor subjects from her many travels.

“I like to render the character of the building as it relates to the landscape and becomes part of it,” Charlotte Wallace said of her watercolors, which are often rural and city landscapes with a focus on older architecture. She finds that watercolor is the best medium for her as it allows her to portray the shapes of these forms with an immediacy and spontaneous color and pigment movement.

Cheryl Hufnagel’s love of art began in early childhood. She paints what she loves or what moves her at the moment. With pastels, she can achieve brilliant color and a variety of application techniques. “Whatever the subject matter, pastels give me the freedom and immediacy to capture a motif and translate my excitement about it into a painting,” Hugnagel said. “Each piece can take on a life all its own and turn out differently than I imagined, surprising even me.”

Jon Schmidt’s love of photography began many years ago when he came across a beautiful scene of fall leaves reflecting in a pond. When he used his family’s Brownie camera to capture the moment and it didn’t translate, he was driven to keep trying. The title of his website, “Images that Inspire” is also what he strives to convey — those fleeting instants that will never be seen again. Schmidt hopes to inspire the viewer to become more involved in the world around them or simply get lost in its beauty.

The Gallery at the Shoreline Center is located in the south end of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Avenue NE in Shoreline. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call 206-417-4645.
