Seattle area playwright Amanda Aikman unveils her new comedies in “Brides &Bagpipes,” as the Driftwood Players present four evenings of PlayCafé, June 10, 11 23 and 24 at Café on the Terrace in Mountlake Terrace.

What happens when a real working-class Scotsman attends the Highland Gaines and Scottish Faire in Mount Vernon, Wash., on a typically frigid Skagit Valley summer day? And how does an aspiring actor find his “character’s arc,” his “inner monologue” and “motivation” to work his catering job at the wedding reception of the woman who dumped him? “Brides &Bagpipes” answers these questions and more in a collection of short one-act comedies by Aikman and directed by Tara Jensen. Standup comic Andrea Wells-Edwards will portray a variety of guests at a reception that follows a bizarre — and dangerous — wedding ceremony in “The Wedding Video,” coauthored by Wells and Aikman.

In the PlayCafé format, theatergoers have the opportunity to experience new works performed by The Driftwood Players as book-in-hand readings. Café on the Terrace offers the reading as a dinner event — a special three-course meal served with a new play.

Brides &Bagpipes plays 7 p.m. Thursday, June 10, Friday, June 11, Wednesday, June 23 &Thursday, June 24 at Café on the Terrace, located at 22826 56th Ave. W. in Mountlake Terrace. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. More information on tickets and show times is available by calling 425-712-9112. Reservations are required.
