Plenty of fun in the summer sun

Support local artists. Find out something new about your neighbors. Cheer for your kids as they march by in a parade. Take in a jazz show that’s slow and smooth.

Make the most of long summer days without leaving South County, with a multitude of events slated to take place in area neighborhoods. Many events support local crafters, artisans and businesses. So come with an open mind, an empty stomach and some sunscreen to enjoy what our communities have to offer.

Most events are free, unless otherwise noted.

Edmonds Jazz Connection

Where: Multiple venues in Edmonds: big bands at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N.; jazz combos at Edmonds Theatre, 415 Main St.; vocal jazz at Edmonds Masonic Center, 515 Dayton St.

When: Multiple free shows from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and an evening gala ($35) at 7:30 p.m. May 29.

What: A day-long celebration of jazz will feature various student groups playing free shows at various venues around Edmonds, while the All-Star Evening Gala features premier student jazz bands and nationally recognized jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan.

Edmonds Rotary Waterfront Festival

Where: Port of Edmonds Marina, 336 Admiral Way

When: 3-10 p.m. June 4; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. June 5; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. June 6

What: Held, appropriately, at the Edmonds waterfront, this festival is also a fundraiser for the Edmonds Rotary and features activities for children, a 5k run, dozens of musical and cultural acts and a chance to see classic yachts and the Lady Washington square-rigged sailing ship.

Edmonds Arts Festival

Where: 700 Main St., Edmonds

When: 11 a.m-9 p.m. June 18; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. June 19; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 20

What: Visual artists of all mediums and from all over the country come to display their work at one of the largest art festivals in the Pacific Northwest. Performing artists, musicians and storytellers will also be on hand, so art lovers of all kinds can find something to enjoy. Relax from a day of shopping and discovering your new favorite artist at the festival’s wine bar and bistro.

LiveARTS Bothell Art Festival

Where: Cascadia Community College/UW Bothell, 18345 Campus Way NE, Bothell

When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 26-27

What: A juried art show, dozens of artisan booths, live entertainment and festival food bring together the Bothell art community as it has for 37 years. To view and purchase work from the juried art show, you can attend the pre-festival Patron Party ($20) at 6 p.m. June 25.

Shoreline Arts Festival

Where: The Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave. NE

When: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. June 26

What: The Shoreline Arts Festival celebrates two decades with its annual two-day community event. This year’s festival features cultural rooms with Pacific Islander and Chinese exhibits as well as the 13th annual Philippine Festival. The festival will also host a juried art show, plenty of artisan booths, a food court, live entertainment, theater and children’s activities.

Mill Creek Festival and Street Fair

Where: Mill Creek Boulevard, just north of 164th Street Southeast, Mill Creek

When: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. July 17-18

What: This two-day street fair is an all-out festival with local artists, neighborhood business booths, food court, live entertainment, beer and wine garden, a community stage with local acts, children’s activity area and even a pet plaza. Produced by the Mill Creek Business Association, the festival features a funk band, an Elvis tribute artist and more on its main stage.

Edmonds in Bloom Rhythm and Blooms Garden Tour

Where: A self-guided tour takes participants around Edmonds and Woodway. A map is provided with ticket purchases.

When: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. July 18

What: This annual event showcases the most beautiful backyards in Edmonds and Woodway. On a self-guided tour, participants experience the intimate charm of the community’s most nurtured yards.

Tour de Terrace

Where: Evergreen Playfields, 22205 56th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace

When: noon- 11 p.m. July 30; 9 a.m.-11 p.m. July 31; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 1

What: The 17th annual Tour de Terrace kicks off with a community parade on the first evening of the festival. A car show dominates the second day ($15), while Saturday and Sunday feature a $5 pancake breakfast sponsored by the Nile Shrine Center. Carnival games, live music and a fireworks display round out the fun.

Brier SeaScare and Porch Light Parade

Where: Downtown Brier on Brier Road, between Brier Library (232nd Street SW) and Brier Realty (238th Street SW)

When: 6 p.m.-dark Aug. 11

What: This eighth annual community event features a kid-focused parade with a sea theme, kids games and activities, a food drive, book sale, musical entertainment, pie eating contest and an outdoor movie night. Kids are invited to participate in KidScare at noon Aug. 6 at the Brier Library to prepare for a walk with the library staff in Brier’s SeaScare Parade Aug. 11.

A Taste of Edmonds

Where: Sixth Street and Bell Street, Edmonds

When: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 13-14; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 15

What: Get a real taste of Edmonds at this three-day festival featuring a variety of food vendors. There are also arts and crafts vendors, kids rides and activities, plenty of live entertainment and roving artists to entertain those waiting for hunger to set in again.

Admission: $3 per person, free for children 12 and under

Edmonds Classic Car Show

Where: Downtown Edmonds

When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12

What: The annual classic car show is now in its 10th year. Classic cars will be back on view, along with classic rock music, “dining gardens” hosted by local restaurants and auto-related vendors. This year, organizers will recognize those who have participated in the show every year since it began. An award ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m.
