EDMONDS — City Council member Michael Plunkett was unanimously elected president of the Council by his peers at the first Council meeting of 2004 on Jan. 13.
Plunkett, the senior member of the Council with the departure of Dave Earling, was elected in 1997. He was elected to the presidency 6-0, with his abstention.
Council member Deanna Dawson, who has served on the Council since 2001, was unanimously elected Council president pro-tem.
The Council president runs meetings in the mayor’s absence; sets the agenda for Council meetings; assigns Council members to committees, schedules committee hearings and supervises the committee system, and supervises the Council staff support person. The Council president pro-tem fills in for the Council president in his or her absence.
The Council president receives $100 per month plus $25 per Council meeting in addition to the pay Council members receive – $600 a month plus $50 per meeting up to eight meetings. Members who were on the Council before the pay was increased receive $350 per month.
New Council members Mauri Moore and Peggy Pritchard Olson were sworn in at the meeting, along with re-elected Council members Dave Orvis and Richard Marin. Mayor Gary Haakenson, also re-elected, was also administered the oath of office for the second time.
Plunkett named Jeff Wilson and Mauri Moore to the City Council’s community services committee, Dave Orvis and Richard Marin to the finance committee and Deanna Dawson and Peggy Pritchard Olson to the public safety committee.
