Edmonds arson update
Investigation of an Edmonds fire has revealed that the blaze was ignited by a former employee. The incident occurred at Canopy World, located in the 21500 block of Hwy. 99, Sept. 17.
The suspect, a 36-year-old Seattle man, left the company in the spring of 2010 to accept another job. There is no indication that he was disgruntled when he left his employment at the Edmonds firm.
Following the fire’s outbreak, a witness saw a man running from the fire and driving away in a vehicle. With the help of that description, an Edmonds officer located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. A short pursuit ensued until the suspect lost control of the vehicle and was taken into custody.
The suspect remains at the Harbor View Medical Center being treated for burns to his hands and face. When released he will be booked into the Snohomish County Jail on the charges of arson, burglary and eluding a police officer.
An initial damage estimate to the business is approximately $100,000. That estimate may rise when a thorough examination and total loss is calculated.
Edmonds driver pleads not guilty
An Edmonds man with a long history of epilepsy and traffic accidents pleaded not guilty Sept. 27 to vehicular homicide in connection with a deadly crash last November. A trial date is set for Jan. 21.
Prosecutors allege that Ben Garnet Holt, 69, was driving a pickup when he slammed into the back of a minivan at nearly 70 mph, fatally injuring John Spudich.
Deputy prosecutor Tobin Darrow said the criminal charge is based on the speed Holt was traveling at the time of the crash and recounted how over the past decade, Holt has been in multiple vehicle crashes connected to his medical condition in 2000, 2005 and 2006.
Spudich, who was just days shy of turning 63, was in his minivan, waiting at a traffic light on 220th Street SW when Holt crashed into him from behind. The speed limit through that intersection is 30 miles per hour.
Purse snatcher nabbed
A 24-year-old Lynnwood man was arrested Sept. 21 after he robbed a woman of her purse in the 16800 block of Highway 99 in Lynnwood.
The 37-year-old Lynnwood woman was walking home from her bus stop when the suspect surprised her from behind and grabbed her purse off of her shoulder and fled on foot.
The woman yelled for help. A a nearby security guard ran after the suspect and tackled him to the ground in the 4800 block of 168th Street. The guard detained the suspect until police arrived.
The woman wasn’t injured during the robbery. The suspect was arrested and booked into the Lynnwood Jail for robbery. Shop Owner Charged with Forgery
The owner of a Lynnwood auto body shop was charged with altering another business’s reseller permit so he could buy parts without paying sales tax.
José R. Guevara, 30, operator of J &R Auto Body, was charged Sept. 17 with a gross misdemeanor by the Financial Crimes Unit of the Attorney General’s Office at the request of the Washington State Department of Revenue. The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to the charging affidavit filed in Snohomish County District Court, Guevara admitted that he may have used the other business’s permit. Court papers also state that checks he wrote for the parts bounced.
This is the first prosecution of a business owner since the new reseller permits were introduced in January. The permits, issued by the Department of Revenue, replaced the widely misused, self-issued resale certificates that cost state and local governments an estimated $100 million a year in lost sales taxes.
Sellers are encouraged to use the online permit verification tool available at http://www.dor.wa.gov/content/doingbusiness/registermybusiness/brd/.
