Shorewood will go for its fourth straight Rotary Cup win at 7:30 tonight at Shoreline Stadium.

This year’s game offers a small twist: the annual crosstown football clash is taking place much earlier than in recent seasons.

In 1999 and 2000 the district rivals didn’t meet until the final week of the season. Last year, the Thunderbirds rolled up 371 rushing yards to claim a Week 6 matchup 28-7.

“I don’t care if it’s the first game or the last game, guys will be fired up on both sides of the ball ready to go,” Shorecrest coach Mike Wollan said.

Both teams bring 1-1 records into the Western Conference South Division game. Shorewood is coming off a 14-6 upset of Jackson and Shorecrest fell to Everett 28-23 last week.

“This is a big game. Nobody’s out of the playoffs,” Shoreline District Athletic Director Paul Lesh said. “I’m expecting two big, enthusiastic crowds.”STILL PERFECT: The following local teams made it through the first few weeks of the 2002 fall season with their perfect records intact:

The Shorewood girls soccer, boys tennis and girls swimming teams are all still undefeated and the King’s football team is off to a 2-0 start.STAT ATTACK: Senior forward Nanda McCormick netted six goals and three assists in the Shorewood girls soccer team’s first four games … King’s has scored at least one touchdown in every quarter of its first two football games … Shorewood was the first team to hold Jackson to just one touchdown since Shorecrest topped the Wolf Pack 14-7 in a Week 7 encounter last season.WIAA NOTES: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association executive board has approved a motion to establish a WIAA Washington State High School Hall of Fame. The inaugural Hall of Fame banquet, including the first induction ceremony, will take place in the spring of 2004.

Former athletes, coaches, contest officials, administrators and special contributors will be eligible for induction. Nominations must come from the executive board, WIAA district boards, WIAA member leagues, the WIAA sports committee or the Washington Officials Association executive board.

The WIAA executive board also approved the relocation of the Class 3A state volleyball championships from St Martin’s College in Lacey to Yakima.

The 2002 tournament is scheduled for Nov. 14-15 at the Yakima SunDome, marking the first time in more than 16 years that the 3A championships will be settled in Eastern Washington.
