King’s Madrazo, Mosiman named Cascade MVPs

King’s seniors Jared Madrazo and Sara Mosiman have been voted most valuable players of the Cascade Conference in boys and girls basketball respectively for the 2005-2006 season.

Madrazo, a 5-foot, 7-inch point guard who was second- team all-conference last year, led the Knights to the conference title and averaged 13.9 points per game.

Mosiman earned her third league MVP nod of her career. She was the Chinook League MVP as a sophomore and Cascade Conference MVP last year. Mosiman, the all-time leading scorer for the Knight girls, with 1,509 points, led King’s to its fourth consecutive league title. Mosiman, who will play for the University of Washington next year, averaged a team-high 19 points per game. She never lost a league or district playoff game in her high school career.

Two key big men on the Knights’ boys team received first-team honors. Charlie Enquist, a 6-foot, 9-inch junior post, who averaged 13.1 points, and Carson Bowlin, a 6-3 senior forward, who averaged 8.4 points, made the first team for the first time.

On the girls’ side, junior forward Danielle Clauson (13.9 points per game) earned first team honors for the second year in a row. Senior guard Caitlyn Faidley (10.6 ppg), a second-team selection last year, also received first team honors. Junior forward Sarah Strand (11.3 ppg) was named to the first team for the first time.

Girls’ head coach Eric Rasmussen was selected as conference coach of the year.

Boys’ head coach Marv Morris was named conference coach of the year for the second year in a row.

Shorecrest varsity, alums square off

The Shorecrest boys soccer team, under first-year head coach Drew Thompson, knocked off the Scots’ alumni 3-1 in a special preseason game played March 10 at Shoreline Stadium.

After a delay because of some snow and thunder, the Scots’ varsity and alumni took the field for the friendly match.

Teddy Mitalas, who retired as head coach after leading the Scots to the state title last season, coached the alumni team that included 22 players going back as far as 1976, the Scots’first state championship team.

“It was nice to see everybody come back and do this,” Mitalas said. “I was quite impressed with the varsity. It was a fun atmosphere.”

“I think we’re going to try to do this every year now,” he said.

Sally Otto honored

Shoreline School District athletic secretary Sally Otto was named the district’s Support Person of the Year for 2006.

Otto, who has worked for the district for 34 years, is the most recognizable name and face associated with the Shoreline Athletics Department, according to students, staff members and community members who nominated her for the award. She is a ubiquitous presence at prep sporting events in Shoreline.

Otto received the award at a special reception March 6 to honor all support staff members. The Shoreline School Board passed a resolution acknowledging March 13-17 as Support Staff Appreciation Week.

2A basketball leaving Yakima

The Class 2A state tournament will move to Tacoma next year, but the 1A will stay in Yakima while the 1B tournament will also be played in the SunDome. King’s will drop down to 1A next year so the Knights hope to be back in Yakima.
