One of Shorewood High School’s longest-tenured coaches has called it quits.
Andy Robertson decided to step down after seven years as Shorewood’s head volleyball coach. Midway through the season Robertson informed the district that 2003 would be his final year at Shorewood.
The Thunderbirds went 3-11 overall this fall and finished eighth in the Western Conference 4A South Division.
“My resignation was actually in the works for a few years,” Robertson said via e-mail. “I gave myself a year-to-year type status starting a couple years ago. Some of the fun was taken out of coaching for me lately from all sides.”
Still, walking away wasn’t easy.
“It was an agonizing decision to make. I have spent the overwhelming majority of my life … in Shoreline,” Robertson said. “I do love the sport of volleyball very much, but what made it really hard was my kids that I leave behind. Whether they believe it or not, I care for each and every one of my kids that I have coached.”
Robertson has coached volleyball at the high school or club level for 15 years and guided Shorewood to the district playoffs in 1997, 1998 and 2002. The T-birds advanced to state in 1998.MLT COACH RESIGNS: Mountlake Terrace football coach Alex Barashkoff won’t be returning next season.
Barashkoff, who wrapped up his fourth season with the Hawks, submitted his resignation last month, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
The responsibilities that come with being a head coach were cutting into Barashkoff’s time with his 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.
Barashkoff was undecided on his future plans.
“There is a chance I might try to be an assistant,” he said. “It takes far less time and doesn’t have the requirements of a head coach. I might take a few years off and teach and be a dad.”
Barashkoff was the head coach at Ingraham for one year and then was an assistant coach at Stanwood prior to coming to Mountlake Terrace.
In Barashkoff’s four seasons, the Hawks compiled an 8-29 overall record.
