The numbers are looking up for the Lynnwood football team.
At least in terms of players.
With a roster of about 20, the Royals need all the bodies they can get and last week four new players turned out, according to Lynnwood coach Andrew Burton.
Two more individuals were set to join the team this week.
The Royals were coming off a 41-0 loss to Western Conference 4A South Division rival Mariner on Sept. 19.
Lynnwood quarterback Foster Hill continued to play well and Burton also was impressed by sophomore fullback Luke St. Marie, who stepped in at halfback in the second half.
St. Marie normally plays fullback.
“He was just able to move to that position and contribute to the team,” Burton said.
Tight end Ryan Mulvaney also had a couple of nice grabs, Burton added.
Mariner was able to take advantage of its speed against the Royals.
“They did a nice job of attacking our perimeter and we had trouble containing them on their sweeps,” Burton said.
The loss was Lynnwood’s 31st straight, the longest streak in the state.
Despite the tough start to the season, Burton said his players are spirits are all right.
“These kids are positive,” said Burton. “Obviously we have things to work on … they definitely keep coming at it each day with a renewed vigor for what we’re trying to accomplish.”
TAKING A STAND: The WIAA executive board passed one item at its Sept. 22 meeting. The “no continuous standing” rule, unpopular among students and the people who have to enforce it, has been overturned. Student sections will be allowed to stand while cheering for tournament teams.
“It’s difficult, because the majority of schools allow it during the year,” McMahan said. “You’re trying to put the horse back in the barn and it’s not easy to do that.”
