This year the Seattle area has had more than 50 days in a row of above 70-degree weather. This is terrific for boating, backyard activities and general summer fun.
However, local officials want to make sure the public is aware of the fire danger that the lack of rain has created.
“The fire danger here and throughout our region is the highest it has been in decades,” Lake Forest Park Police Chief Dennis Peterson warns. “Because Lake Forest Park is so heavily forested we are especially vulnerable to fire.”
Police and fire officials have some tips for making homes safer from the danger of fire:
• Be especially careful with backyard barbeques. Make sure your fire is completely out before leaving it unattended.
• Do not throw cigarettes or other burning material from the car.
• Do not store fireworks in your home.
• Be sure you are storing flammable materials in a safe manner and keep them away from the house. You can dispose of these materials at the Aurora Household Haz-Site, which is open Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday by appointment only. Call 206-296-4692 for an appointment.
• Trim trees away from your roof.
• Plants are low growing and less flammable.
• Clear the debris from around your yard.
• Make sure leaves and pine needles are cleared from your gutters.
• Clear a non-flammable area around your house. Make sure your home fire extinguisher is working.
