SHORELINE

Senior Kevin Ramos, the only returning state participant off last year’s Shorecrest boys track team, scored points in two events at the Shoreline Invitational April 28, the only Scot to do so.

A mostly sunny day with temperatures in the low 60s greeted the athletes, a sharp contrast to last year’s rainy, windy misery.

Still, for the Scots, last year was memorable as they won the meet for the first time in school history. The Invitational is the largest all-boys meet in the Pacific Northwest, with 74 schools and more than 900 athletes participating.

This year, Evergreen of Vancouver won the team title with a total of 64 points beating out second-place Kentwood, which had 54.5 points.

Ramos, who ran season-bests of 10.7 seconds in the 100 and 22.2 in the 200 at the Viking Classic April 21 at Lake Stevens, came into the Invitational ready to test himself against some of the top sprinters in the state.

Ramos finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.42.

“It felt like the best one all season,” Ramos said. “Didn’t really die at the end of it.”

Ryan Hamilton of Evergreen won the race in 21.71.

Ramos won his preliminary heat of the 200 with a time of 22.57.

Ramos tied for fifth in the 100-meter final with a time of 10.92. Entering the race, nine competitors had run times of 10.90 or faster.

Ramos ran in lane eight after he slipped into the finals after a poor start in his preliminary race.

In the finals, he said he “felt really smooth,” and got off to a good start.

“Now I’m working on finishing strong,” he said. “Keeping a good pace throughout the race.”

Hamilton of Evergreen won the race with a time of 10.71.

“I just had a good group of guys to run with,” Ramos said.

Ramos scored 8.5 points for Shorecrest, which finished 31st.

Shorewood senior Kelley Neubauer finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 149-9. He scored the only points of the meet for the Thunderbirds, who finished 43rd.

It’s Neubauer’s first year of track as well as first year of the event.

“I really like it actually,” he said. “I’m thinking of doing it in college, who knows.”

Neubauer plans to go to Western Washington University next year where he’s agreed to walk on to the football team as a linebacker and, perhaps, a defensive end.

Shorecrest junior Marek Domanski, another first-time track athlete, finished 10th with a throw of 141-8. Domanski, a defensive lineman for the Scots football team, said he thought the shot put would be his main event but it’s the discus where he’s had the most success so far.

Steven Ayers of Sehome won the discus with a throw of 168-9. He also won the shot put with a toss of 62-6 and took the field athlete of the meet honors.

Shorewood senior Justyn Cox placed ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-9.

Shoreline Christian senior Jeremy Rasor finished 17th in the 1,600 with a time of 4:34.31.

Shorecrest pole vaulter Roy McElmurry did not compete because of an injury to his left knee suffered in practice earlier in the week.

Max O’Donoghue-McDonald of Seattle Prep set the only meet record of the day. The senior, who won the state 3,200 title as a sophomore and finished fourth last year, finished first in the 3,200 a time of 8:59.73. The time was the fastest in the state so far this year. Robbie Barany of Eisenhower set the previous meet record of 9:06.34 in 2005.

O’Donoghue-McDonald was named track athlete of the meet.
