Gold Creek Community Church’s efforts to set a Guinness world record for people in Groucho Marx costumes was the latest in a recent string of record-setting attempts in the Mill Creek area.

The first attempt was Oct. 15, when House of Bread, a bakery located in Mill Creek Town Center, set a Guinness world record for the largest cinnamon roll ever baked. The treat weighed in at 246.5 pounds.

On March 19 of this year, Bill Ekse, a Brier resident who grew up in Mill Creek and works as a firefighter for Fire District 7, set the standard for elevation gained on a step machine in a 24-hour period.

Ekse climbed at least 66,000 steps to create a new category in the Guinness Book of World Records. Ekse’s effort also raised $12,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. A friend of his, Chris Pettersen of Mill Creek, died of cancer at age 24 in 1998.
