LYNNWOOD

Five young people were injured in a rollover crash on I-5 on Tuesday while apparently fleeing a hit-and-run accident, said Washington State Patrol trooper Kirk Rudeen.

Troopers believe the driver, a 17-year-old Everett boy, hit an occupied pickup truck in Lynnwood and was speeding away in the northbound I-5 carpool lane when his Chevy Blazer rolled near I-405 just after 4 p.m.

A 17-year-old Everett girl and a 19-year-old Lynnwood woman were rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries, Rudeen said. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, he said.

The driver and two Everett men, 20 and 18, also sustained injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, Rudeen said. The passengers were taken to the Colby campus of Providence Everett Medical Center. The driver was treated at the scene and released to a parent, said Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.

The two left lanes of I-5 were closed for two hours while State Patrol troopers investigated the wreck. Rush-hour traffic backed up south to Seattle.

Troopers are investigating the crash as a vehicular assault.

The pickup was damaged, but no one was injured in the hit-and-run crash at the intersection of 200th Street SW and 40th Avenue W. The driver of the Chevy Blazer reportedly didn’t stop, but was not pursued by police, Rudeen said.

Someone who witnessed the hit-and-run drove by the accident scene on I-5 minutes later and recognized the Chevy Blazer from the earlier accident.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor, Rudeen said.
