Turns out Run of the Mill isn’t dead. It’s been reincarnated as a charitable event.
The race, one of Mill Creek’s longest-running annual events and entering its 21st year, will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8. Like the past few years, the event will take place the same day as the Mill Creek Festival.
New to this year’s Run of the Mill is that all proceeds from entry fees will benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The past 20 races were run by the South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce.
“With a new 5k course and an energized management team, it is our goal to carry on the Run of the Mill tradition while allowing volunteers and participants to finish the race with a sense of even greater accomplishment beyond their race results,” said Jon Hickey, a cancer survivor who will manage this year’s event. “Our mission is to bring the community together to help a noble cause.”
This year’s race also has involvement from local high school cross-country coaches. Steve Knox, a Mill Creek resident who is coordinating the race, was a founding member of Jackson High School’s track and cross country booster club. His son, Caleb, was a standout runner at Jackson who now attends the University of Washington.
Knox, a recreational runner, owns Seattle-based Columbia Funding, a mortgage firm that is opening a branch office in Mill Creek Town Center in October.
The Run of the Mill will be one of two such events that weekend. Part of this year’s Mill Creek Festival is a 5K and 10K walk on Sunday, July 9 that will go from McCollum Park to Mill Creek Town Center via the North Creek Trail.
The event is still seeking sponsors. To become a sponsor, call Knox at 425-931-9579 or send an e-mail to stevek@cfundinginc.com. In-kind donations are also being accepted. To make a donation, call Evan Wirkkala at 425-220-3826 or send an e-mail to Evan.wirkkala@prudential.com.
