Children can get the new year off to an artful start with the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s Children’s Series 2003 performance series.
Cry of the Rooster Theatre opens the series at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 with “Tierra del Fuego” in the Shoreline Community College Little Theater. Based on poems of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, this fast-paced parable of prejudice features shadow puppets, visual puns, astounding images and live music.
At 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, Thistle Theatre brings “The Pitfalls of Mr. Yama” to the Shoreline Center Auditorium. After swallowing a cherry pit, Mr. Yama, a wealthy miser, sprouts a tree from his head. Encounters with mythical Japanese characters follow in a tale full of humor, danger and excitement told with Bunraku, shadow and blacklight puppets.
Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre will present “Cinderella” at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29 in the Shoreline Community College Little Theater. Kid-sized puppets with rich costumes set the stage in this original musical based on the French classic. Even beyond her nagging stepsisters, Cinderella discovers her biggest obstacle is believing she deserves her dreams.
The final performance of the series is the return of Missoula Children’s Theater, back for their 10th year at the Shoreline Arts Festival on Saturday, June 28. Fifty local students, two professional actor/directors and colorful costumes, will present a musical production which will be announced on the Arts Council website in December.
