FIRE DISTRICT 1

Seasonal fire watch

Fire professionals warn that this time of year home fires trend upward due to the season.

The first dips into chilly temperatures cause heaters, which have not been used in months, to be put to work.

“This is a common cause of fires this time of year. Sometimes combustibles get placed too close to heaters that aren’t in use during warmer weather. This becomes a fire hazard when the temperatures drop and heaters turn on,” said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1. “To prevent fires, keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable heater.”

Combustibles placed too close to a wall heater was the apparent origin of a fire that caused more than $17,000 damage to a Mountlake Terrace home on Nov. 24.

A neighbor heard the smoke alarm sounding at a single-story house in the 4700 block of 237th Street Southwest and reported the fire at 12:12 p.m. No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

Smoke was coming from the roof vents when firefighters arrived. Crews from Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Shoreline responded to the call and quickly extinguished the fire.

Fire damage was contained to the laundry room and a wall in the family room. The family has insurance and were able to stay in the house once electricity was restored.

December is the peak time of year for home candle fires according to the National Fire Protection Association. Each year, an estimated 15,600 home structure fires started by candles are reported to local fire departments resulting in an estimated 150 deaths, 1,270 injuries and over $500 million in estimated property loss.

There are many tips to avoid a tragic fire in your home this holiday season. Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep. Keep candles at least 1 foot away from things that can catch fire, like clothing, books and curtains. Use candle holders that are sturdy and won’t tip over easily. Keep candlewicks trimmed to one-quarter inch, and extinguish taper and pillar candles when they get to within two inches of the holder. Votives and containers should be extinguished before the last half-inch of wax starts to melt.

Snohomish County Fire District 1 responded to 278 calls the week of Nov. 19-25.
