Sunny skies and a low tide combined to create an ideal day at the beach for more than 150 participants and onlookers at the Edmonds Sand Sculpting Contest Monday, July 30 on Edmonds’ Marina Beach.

Forty-seven entrants dug, carved and molded their way through the competition for one of six Golden Buckets filled with salt-water taffy from event sponsor Nama’s Candy Store. The contest is an annual event organized by the Edmonds Parks and Recreation Department.

The winners are:

• “Castle with Drawbridge and Moat”, kids 13 and under (two winners): Joe and Roni Flynn, Kelly and Bailey Gootee; and Hailey and Caitlin Carlson.

• “Your Favorite Creature (real or mythical)”, kids 13 and under: Momo and Sota Kitahara for their turtle with seaweed detail.

• “Sand Sculpture”, kids 14 and older: The Ninjas (Emily Percival, Bryn Fraker, Alyssa Goffard and Jackie Robinson) built an ancient Mayan temple.

• “Castle with Drawbridge and Moat”, family: The Fraker family of Edmonds.

• “Your favorite creature (real or mythical)”, family: The Varga family of Lynnwood built a shark hooked on a fishing line.
