The Shoreline Community College Art Gallery presents works by California artist Nancy Lynn Toolan now through April 30.
Using Japanese papers with wax and ink, Toolan breathes life into the material, bringing out the luminosity within the paper. In “Passages,” Toolan captures in the play of light on materials, the visual subtlety intrinsic to the ephemeral nature of life around us.
“I am interested in the play of both natural and artificial light on materials and how it can often capture a visual subtlety intrinsic to the ephemeral nature of life around us,” Tollan said of her creative process. “In this work using Japanese paper I find myself attempting to breathe life into the material with the aim of bringing out the luminosity within the paper.”
While the visual elements she uses in her work continue to be pared down, they compel her to look more closely at subject matter and to focus on that which is both art and life to me.
“My continued effort to investigate the inherent, transient qualities of life causes me to feel at peace,” Toolan said.
