The Edmonds School District Board of Directors unanimously appointed Patrick Shields as Director District 5 to replace former member Larry Ehl. The decision was made at the Nov. 19 board meeting.

“I am very impressed with the Edmonds School District, and that it is moving in a very positive direction,” Shields said in a district press release. “It is going to be a terrific experience.”

Shields is the president of Northwest Procurement Institute, Inc. in Edmonds and currently has five children who are attending schools in the Edmonds District.

Interim Board president Mimi Terwilliger expressed her approval of the decision to appoint Shields.

“Director Ehl left big shoes to fill and the Board and District were very fortunate that so many interested and qualified candidates came forward to apply for the vacancy,” Terwilliger said. “In choosing Director Shields, we have selected someone who not only has a large personal stake in the district’s schools, but also has professional interests and skills in helping people be successful.”

Ehl resigned from his position on the Board in September due to personal and professional changes. By law, the Board had to appoint someone to fill his position within 90 days. Shields was chosen after the Board received letters of interest and interviewed six individuals.

The District 5 position will be open for election in November 2003.
