Change in fees for facilities, fields
Groups interested in renting school facilities and fields will face a slight change in fees effective Sept. 1. While the rate schedule will not change, a 5 percent facility/field improvement surcharge fee will be added to the total rental cost. This additional revenue will be put into a long-term, interest-earning account for field and facilities improvement modernization, which currently depends on voter-approved bonds for funding.
In addition, groups renting rooms at the Shoreline Center will also see an increase in fees. The rate schedule will have an average increase of 10 percent. The increases will help offset increased utility and labor costs.
The last time the Shoreline Center, other district facilities and fields saw a change in fees was in 2003.
Support TIA in Shoreline parade
The Traffic Intersection Awareness (T.I.A.) Foundation is looking for more than 100 elementary, middle and high school students to support its Safe Routes 2 School campaign by walking in the Shoreline parade. Anyone interested in joining T.I.A. and its custom-made 2005 PT Cruiser can meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 20 at St. Mark Catholic Church, 18033 15th Ave. NE. The T.I.A. Foundation will also release 21 doves at the intersection of 170th and 15th, where foundation director David Townsend’s daughter, Tia, was killed in a crosswalk March 28, 2002.
The T.I.A. Foundation’s goal is to promote its SR2S (Safe Routes 2 School) campaign, which includes television and radio ads and creating an interactive educational DVD for elementary school children and their parents about the pitfalls of walking and crossing the roadways to and from their school. They will learn the necessary tools to be more proactive about making sure everyone can stay safe while using roadways; by picking the proper traffic control device, using a crosswalk, better/brighter clothing and choosing the safest route to school.
The focus is on educating and bringing awareness to drivers and pedestrians, creating more responsible users of the road; to create safer environments to walk in and for more law enforcement. Combining these key elements, they hope to save lives.
