Students raise funds for contest

Eight teenagers from Shoreline Community Church scored high enough at the district level to garner an invitation to the National Fine Arts Festival through the Assemblies of God churches. Caitlin Chakos, Jaci Forsyth, Jessey Forsyth, Jordan Drewer, Kristin Drewer, Nick Drewer, Rebecca Shilley and Tori Speck are raising money so that they can attend the festival Aug. 1-6 in Denver.

To raise money, they are organizing a garage sale that’s taking place today, June 3 and tomorrow, June 4 at 15705 East Shore Drive in Lynnwood. In the future, they will host a bowl-a-thon at Spin Alley in Shoreline, in which they will gather pledges for the number of pins they can knock down in an hour and a half. Student named to dean’s list

Jeff Swingle, a 2004 graduate of Shorecrest High School, was named to the dean’s list for fall semester, 2004 at Biola University. Biola is located in La Mirada, Calif.

Baccalaureate for grads, families

A non-denominational Christian service for members of the class of 2005 and their families will be held at 1 p.m. on June 18 at Westminster Community Church, 14550 Westminster Way N., in Shoreline, with a reception to follow. Everyone is welcome.

SCC celebrates graduation

Shoreline Community College will host its commencement at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5 in the SCC gymnasium. The keynote speaker at this spring’s graduation is state Rep. John Lovick, D-Mill Creek. Lovick attended SCC in 1977 and received his Associates of Applied Arts and Sciences in criminal justice. A cake and punch reception will follow in the courtyard, weather permitting. Attendance for commencement is by ticket only.

Students attend bio dinner, forum

Shorecrest and Shorewood high school students were invited to attend the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research dinner and forum, which took place May 20-21. Shorecrest’s Camille Charlier, Ben Bodi, Heather Earp, Hanna Fallisgaard, Eva Hansen, Marcus Kelly, Mikki Kressbach and Oren Nimni were each featured during the dinner program. Shorewood’s Jolene Mork and Phil Rodenbough and several other Shorecrest students also attended.

Students were selected and invited to attend by different businesses funding the dinner. They were asked to display their work in the lobby prior to the dinner and had a chance to discuss their work with many prominent scientists from a variety of companies at that time.

Boosters grant scholarships

Each year, the Shorewood High School Boosters recognizes students for their outstanding participation and involvement at Shorewood and in the community. This year, the boosters awarded Elizabeth Gasperini and Katie Whittle $1,000 each. Gasperini is planning to attend Pacific Lutheran University to study journalism with a minor in Spanish.

She is planning to go to law school as well. Whittle will be attending the University of Washington in the fall and will major in communications and minor in psychology. She hopes to become a corporate events planner.

LFP Rotary awards scholarships

At its May 18 meeting, the Lake Forest Park Breakfast Rotary awarded scholarships to four Shorecrest High School students.

Jonathan Glancy will attend McGill University in Montreal in the fall. While at Shorecrest, he participated in football, baseball and helped found the Lake Forest Park Youth Council. He hopes to someday own his own business. Sae Joo Lee will attend Seattle University and would like to study law. She moved to the area from Korea when she was 4 years old and would like to use her experiences to help others. John Rohrback is interested in the environment and plans to study wildlife biology at the University of Montana this fall. After participating in the Running Start program for two years, during which she completed college and high school requirements, Olga Vilkevich will enter the University of Washington’s business school in the fall.

Preschool celebrates

King’s Preschool and Childcare in Shoreline is pleased to announce that with the opening of its new Infant Center in July it is changing its name to The Castle Children’s Center at King’s. Join the school in celebrating at its carnival event in the shape of a Medieval Fayre from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

They will have a bouncy castle and other medieval-themed games and crafts. The cost is $5 per family. Everyone is welcome. Feel free to come dressed in appropriate princess and other medieval folk costumes!
