Beverage policy altered by board

At its June 20 meeting, the Shoreline School Board approved a revised policy regarding beverages served and sold during the school day on each site. Options can not include beverages of high sugar content with no nutritional value, i.e. soda pop.

Items that will be allowed include low/non-fat milk, juice with a minimum of 50 percent fruit juice and no added sugars and diet or low/no-calorie soda pop. These changes would not affect beverage sales at evening and weekend events both on and off school sites.

This proposal comes in the wake of a state Senate bill signed in March, 2004, which required schools to update their nutrition standards by this August.
