S’wood boosters plan barbecue

The Shorewood Boosters annual community barbecue will be held on Friday, Sept. 9 just before the Shorewood home football game against Shorecrest. Follow the barbecue aroma to the large tent erected in front of the ticket booths at Shoreline Stadium. For $5, attendees will receive a full dinner including hamburger, cheeseburger or veggie burger, coleslaw, chips, dessert and water or soda. Come and join the Shorewood Boosters as they celebrate fall, football and team spirit.

Support TIA in Shoreline parade

The Traffic Intersection Awareness (T.I.A.) Foundation is looking for more than 100 elementary, middle and high school students to support its Safe Routes 2 School campaign by walking in the Shoreline parade. Anyone interested in joining T.I.A. and its custom-made 2005 PT Cruiser can meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 20 at St. Mark Church, 18033 15th Ave. NE. The T.I.A. Foundation will also release 21 doves at the intersection of 170th Street and 15th Avenue, where foundation director David Townsend’s daughter, Tia, was killed in a crosswalk March 28, 2002.

The T.I.A. Foundation’s goal is to promote its SR2S (Safe Routes 2 School) campaign, which includes television and radio ads and creating an interactive educational DVD for elementary school children and their parents about the pitfalls of walking and crossing the roadways to and from their school. They will learn the necessary tools to be more proactive about making sure everyone can stay safe while using our roadways; by picking the proper traffic control device, using a crosswalk, better/brighter clothing and choosing the safest route to school, etc.

The focus is on educating and bringing awareness to drivers and pedestrians, creating more responsible users of the road; to create safer environments to walk in (engineering); and for enforcement of the law. By combining these key elements, they hope to save lives.

E-mail the awareness campaign for information, at tia_foundation@yahoo.com, or show up to the event.
