Music, dance, lecture at SCC
A number of presentations will take place in April at Shoreline Community College.
Instrumental and vocal students will perform solos from the Renaissance to the 20th century at Shoreline Community College’s Honors Recital at 7:30 p.m. April 7 in the Campus Theater.
Join faculty pianists Helena Azevedo (Brazil), Jensina Byington (United States), and Dainius Vaicekonis (Lithuania) as these three pianists present piano music from the countries of their birth at 3 p.m. April 10 in the Campus Theater.
The award-winning Carmona Flamenco has made extensive concert, festival and cabaret appearances throughout Spain and the United States. Often performing with guest artists, Carmona Flamenco specializes in contemporary and traditional flamenco music, dance and song. Flemenco will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 9 in the Campus Theater.
Dr. Shakti Butler is an African-American woman of biracial West Indian and Russian-Jewish heritage. She will present “Transformative Learning, Social Justice and Compassion” at 7:30 p.m. April 14 in the SCC gymnasium. As the executive director of World Trust, Dr. Butler initiated “Heart-to-Heart Conversations,” a national program of public dialogue that speaks to critical social issues of race, gender, class and sexual orientation.

LFP preschool hosts auction
The Lake Forest Park Co-op Preschool is hosting its fourth-annual silent and live auction from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 3 at the Lake Forest Park Civic Club, 17301 Beach Drive.
The live auction begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $6.50 each and can be purchased at the door. Items to be auctioned off include hotel stays, restaurant certificates, kids’ items and more.
SCS students’ art shown at regionals
Five Shoreline Christian High School students had work represented in the 2005 regional High School Art Show sponsored by Puget Sound Educational Service District. Annamarie de Guzman, from Shoreline, and Rachel Werkhoven, from Monroe, submitted oil pastels, Kyle Paulsen of Marysville showed a mixed media composition and Laurel Hodges of Brier presented a charcoal drawing.
Senior David Fertello, from Brier, received an Outstanding Achievement Award for excellence in the etching medium for his entry, “Jungle Nautilus.”
There were 251 entries submitted from 28 school districts from the region. An award ceremony was held on March 13 for all awards. All award winners and the entire art show gallery may be viewed at www.psesd.org/artshow.
Shoreline drives to No. 1 award
At the recent Washington Association for Pupil Transportation Technical Skills Competition, Jann Pence, Shoreline School District mechanic, took first place in the Puget Sound Educational Service District regional level for bus mechanics and third place overall for the region. The event featured a two-part competition: written test and hands-on diagnosis and repair.
Pence will represent the school district and Puget Sound ESD in competition for the state title on May 14th in Yakima.
SCS teacher published
Deborah Womelsduff, English teacher and drama coach at Shoreline Christian School, recently published an article entitled “The Paradox of Structure and Freedom: An Experiment in Writing Poetry” in the English Journal – March 2005 issue. Seniors Steve Vander Zee and Jonathon Monillas also had their poems published in the English Journal as examples of Dinka-Style poems. Womelsduff is part of the Puget Sound Writing Project and a founding member of Broadswords, a writing group of language arts educators.
Kellogg recognizes parents, educator
On March 1, Kellogg Middle School’s PTSA awarded the Golden Acorn Award to PTSA members Lisa Anderson and Shannon Greenburg for their volunteer work. The recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award was Gayle McDougall-Treacy for her work as Family Advocate at Kellogg and Shorecrest High School. All recipients received a special pin and certificate from the Washington State PTA. A contribution was also made in their name to the Washington State PTA Scholarship Fund which awards more than $55,000 in annual scholarships to students entering their freshman year at a university, college or technical school.
Students named merit finalists
Three Shoreline high school students have achieved the status of National Merit Finalists. They are Elizabeth Edwards and Morgan Shaw from Shorewood and Vivian Lin from Shorecrest. Achieving Finalist status requires exceptional academic performance in all grades 9-12, participation in school and community activities, and exemplary citizenship. Finalists represent the top 1 percent of college bound seniors in the United States. Finalists are now eligible for scholarship funds from corporations, colleges and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Pre-Kindergarten offered at King’s
King’s Schools is proud to announce a new Pre-Kindergarten program on their elementary school campus. Opportunities abound for children in this new program. Children not only receive academic instruction but will also participate in specialized areas in music, P.E., library, computer technology and Spanish. The large playground and Big Toy will provide lots of fun during recess. The program offers Monday through Friday morning and afternoon classes.

Students receive distinction
Four Shorecrest High School graduates received academic distinction from Whitman College for receiving a 3.5 or higher grade-point average during fall semester 2004. Carlene Deits, a junior, Kelsey Denney, a sophomore, Chadwick Frisk, a freshman, and Kaileen Miller, a senior, all received the honor. Whitman is a private, liberal-arts college in Walla Walla, Wash.
