New VP hired at Cascadia CC
Cascadia Community College recently hired Dr. David Wain Coon as the new vice president for student success.
Coon previously served as the executive dean of student services at Green River Community College in Auburn, and has previously been vice president/dean of student services at The Art Institute of Seattle and director of student development at Pierce College in Lakewood.
Coon also volunteers with several local groups including the Central Washington University Alumni Board of Directors, The Seattle Men’s Chorus and Children’s Home Society of Washington Board of Directors.
EvCC recruiting for new program
Everett Community College will begin recruiting faculty and students this fall for its new Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA).
In the fall of 2004, the academy, in conjunction with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and the National Marine Fisheries Service, is scheduled to begin helping high school students in the Running Start Program earn their diploma and an associates degree. Students involved with the ORCA program will gain knowledge and credits in science, math, English and history.

Help fill backpacks for needy kids
The Northshore School District and the surrounding communities are having a Backpacks for Kids school supply drive now until Aug. 15. Volunteers are asking for donations of school supplies such as three-ring binders, pens, bottled glue and other items to help fill backpacks for children of Northshore families in need.
There are over 30 designated drop-off sites in and around Bothell, and a complete list of sites can be found at http://www.nsd.org.
Bothell drop-off sites include:

Next school board meeting is set
The next regular meeting of the Everett School Board is scheduled for 4:30 pm. on Tuesday, Aug. 26 in the board room of the Educational Service Center, 4730 Colby Ave., Everett.
Agendas for regular board meetings are available by calling the superintendent’s office at 339-4205.
School board positions are open
With the Nov. 4 school board election coming up, two seats on the Everett School Board will be open, including president Karen Madsen’s and member Sue Cooper’s positions.
The last day to file with the County Auditor is Friday, Aug. 1.
