The Edmonds Arts Commission recently named the winners in the fifth annual Youth Writing Contest for students in the Edmonds School District (or who have an Edmonds address) in grades 9-12. This year 107 contest entries were received; 63 fiction and 44 poetry. The theme was “Passages,” and will be used for the adult writing contest held in conjunction with the Write on the Sound Writing Contest in October.
The winners in the fiction category are First Place, Waide Adams, a freshman at Edmonds-Woodway High School, for “Looking Forward;” Second Place, Tawnie Wetzsteon, a freshman at Edmonds-Woodway High School, for “Notable Notions;” and Third Place, Andy Ingram, a freshman at Chrysalis School, for “My Guitar.”
In the poetry category, Steven DeBoard, a junior at Edmonds-Woodway High School, won first place for “Searching for Purpose;” Abel Tsegga, a freshman at Meadowdale High School, won second place for “Questions That Change You;” and Ashley Hansen, a junior at Edmonds-Woodway High School, won third place for “Eternal Keeper.”
The first, second and third place winners will receive cash awards and all winners will have their work reproduced in an anthology that will be distributed within the Edmonds School District, public libraries and at the Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference. They will also receive a ticket to the 2003 Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference keynote address by Robert Michael Pyle and an invitation to the conference reception.

He will be honored at a banquet June 7 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
