Top student production

in state award

Enterprise staff

Shorecrest High School’s spring musical production “Oliver!” was recently named the top student production in the state at the first annual Fifth Avenue Musical Theatre Awards June 11 in Seattle.

Shorecrest was one of only six schools nominated for the “Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical” award. Nominations were based on school size, budget, and other creative aspects of production including acting, singing, choreography, and directing; orchestra; stage crew; costumes and makeup; and scenery and lighting.

Junior Brian Earp also earned the “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” award for his portrayal of Fagin. Earp performed a portion of the musical number “Reviewing the Situation” in a medley of songs with the seven other young men nominated in the category.

Director Brad Reed also received recognition for “Outstanding Direction.” The school’s drama department earned nominations in 13 of the 20 categories.

Each of the six nominated schools was invited to perform on the 5th Avenue stage at the Awards Ceremony. The Shorecrest cast selected the musical number “Consider Yourself” from “Oliver!”

Shorecrest Drama Director and Producer Linda Johnson accepted the award on behalf of the cast, orchestra and crews. Local celebrities presented the awards in front of a packed house of over 2,000 guests and performers.

Modeled after the Tony Awards for Broadway excellence, The 5th Avenue Theatre initiated a program designed to recognize and honor the work, talent, and commitment that faculty and students put into their high school musical productions.

Shorecrest High School was one of 34 schools throughout Washington state that entered the competition with its production of “Oliver!,” which was viewed on two separate performances in May by 5th Avenue judges.

A complete list of winners is posted on The 5th Avenue’s Web site at www.5thavenuetheatre.org. Photos of the gala event may be viewed on www.yourphotoz.com.
