Student wins full scholarship to SU
Meadowdale High School student Nazir Harb, a native of Mexico and the son of Mexican and Lebanese immigrants, was recently awarded a full scholarship to Seattle University. The scholarship will make Harb a Sullivan Scholar, and will pay for housing, meals, and four years of tuition. The scholarship is given to a handful of students each year, and is based on their leadership skills, commitment to social justice, communication skills and academics.
Harb founded his school’s Diversity Leadership Team, is a member of the National Honor Society, and was an Edmonds Rotary Student of the Month. He serves as a middle school tutor and has volunteered over 500 hours at local hospitals. He is also bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English.
The scholarship requires students to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, take 45 credits each year, assume a leadership role on campus, participate in regular events with other Sullivan Scholars and complete a Seattle U service project or study program in another country.
Auto students
go to nationals
Meadowdale High School students Jeffery Head and Eric Estrella will travel to New York City to compete in the National High School Technology Competition at the New York International Auto Show April 20-24.
Head and Estrella earned spots in the competition through high scores on an 80-question test at the in the Washington State Automotive Youth Educational Systems automotive competition. The students will be accompanied by their instructor, David Robbins.
All students attending the national competition bring home tools and prizes for their schools and winners receive cash prizes.
Health survey meeting set
A meeting will be held regarding the results from the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wed., April 2 in the Great Hall at Meadowdale High School. Community members, parents and students are invited.
The statewide survey was done in the district in the fall of 2002, and is aimed at identifying youth health issues and behavior risks.
Lectures focus on parenting issues
Seattle’s Child, Children’s Hospital and KCTS will sponsor a lecture series on parenting issues beginning Monday, March 24. Lecture topics include: Insight into the Developmental Needs of Infants and Young Children; The Moods and Mysteries of Adolescence: A Crash Course for Parents; Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children; and Raising Spirited Children.

Student Scout honored
Alexis Von Schlieder, of Edmonds, was selected to attend a Girl Scout Wider Opportunity event with other Scouts from across the world. Von Schlieder is currently a freshman and has been a Girl Scout for nine years.
