New director at UW Bothell
The University of Washington, Bothell, has named Dr. Tana Hasart as their new Interim Director of Student Affairs.
Dr. Hasart will be responsible for the college’s advising and recruitment, admissions, registration, financial aid, student development and will be working with student government and newspaper.
Previously, Dr. Hasart was President of Clark College in Vancouver, and is a graduate of Seattle University, and has a Ed. D. in Educational Leadership.
Training course for
new school tutors
Powerful Partners, a group of six elementary schools and community partners, is offering a two-part professional tutor training course to volunteers who can spend one to two hours a week working with an elementary student. The course is scheduled for noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 28-29.
The training will be at Maplewood Parent Cooperative (8500 200th Street SW. in Edmonds) and will consist of learning how to be a successful elementary school volunteer, understanding how children learn to read and specific techniques to help children with reading skills.
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to practice these skills with students before being assigned to a specific school. Refreshments will be served.
Schools working with Powerful Partners include Beverly, Edmonds, Lynndale, Meadowdale and Seaview elementary schools and Maplewood Parent Cooperative K-8.
Adult volunteers of all ages are invited to the training course and to be a part of the Powerful Tutors Corps.

Student wins at Evergreen St. Fair
Heatherwood Middle School student and Snohomish County 4-H Pawsabilities member Jean Weatherwax, 13, earned Reserve Champion at the Evergreen State Fair in September.
Jean was a top 10 trophy finalist for her 4-H public presentation, “Leaping Ahead,” which focused on native frog species in Washington state and ways to help protect them.
Entering “Carmen,” a rescued cinnamon tabby, in Fitting and Showing, Jean also placed among the top 10 finalists at the Puyallup State Fair.
Biology team joins teaching program
The University of Washington has announced that EvCC’s Biology ‘Team’ of Fayla Schwartz, Rene Kratz, and Pamela Pape has been accepted to participate in the four-year-long FIRST II (Faculty Institute for Reforming Science Teaching) program. The FIRST program is jointly funded by the National Science Foundation and UW, which was initiated in 1998 to prepare communities of faculty associated with field stations.
EvCC’s team will be associated with UW’s Pack Experimental Forest (near Mt. Rainier) to utilize inquiry-based active learning approaches for reforming undergraduate biology courses and curriculum.
One of the specific aims of the FIRST project is to prepare biology teams to become regional leaders in professional development.
The eight participating teams include: Archbold Biological Station Team, Baltimore-Washington Urban FIRST Team, University of Akron Team, Hancock Biological Station Team, Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) Team, University of Washington Team, San Diego State University Team, and the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station Team.
