Parents anxious to know where their children will attend school next fall if Woodway and Evergreen Elementary schools close now have an answer.
Last week, Edmonds School District officials and a parent committee recommended that the Edmonds School Board approve the school closures, new boundaries and a plan to move Terrace Park K-8 seventh and eighth graders.
If the board approves the moves, some schools that students will attend will be fuller than others. The board is scheduled to vote Dec. 16.
Only students who attend schools recommended for closure would have to move.
“There were difficult meetings, there were difficult moments, and we did not all agree at different times. But there was general consensus at the end,” said Kate Shelby Martin, the parent who chairs the Boundaries and Enrollment Subcommittee of the Citizens Planning Committee. The groups have been meeting for months to craft a recommendation on the issue.
Closing the two schools is estimated to save about $1.4 million per year. The changes will take effect next fall.
If Woodway Elementary is closed, about 75 students would go to Sherwood Elementary and about 80 students to Westgate Elementary.
If they do, 100 percent of the classrooms would be used in both schools.
If Woodway is closed, Westgate and Sherwood would be closed to open enrollment for at least two years.
All fifth-grade students will get the option to go to Sherwood next year.
If Evergreen Elementary closes, 95 students will move to Mountlake Terrace Elementary and 113 students will move to Terrace Park K-8 School.
Students west of the line will go to Mountlake Terrace Elementary and students east will go to Terrace Park K-8.
Fifth graders would be able to choose Terrace Park for their sixth grade year.
If the board approves the closures and boundaries, Mountlake Terrace Elementary is estimated to be at 75 percent of its capacity – now it’s at 56 percent.
Terrace Park would be at 86 percent of its capacity – now it’s at 85 percent.
In addition, seventh and eighth graders at Terrace Park K-8, about 100 students, will move to Brier Terrace Middle School, as will the 10 seventh and eighth grade special education students in the Life Skills program.
That would put Brier Terrace Middle at about 85 percent capacity.
Finally, if the board approves the closures, Mountlake Terrace Elementary and Terrace Park will be closed to open enrollment for the next two years.
The schools effected have copies of the proposals and boundary maps, and if the board approves the closures in December, a letter will be sent to each affected family.
New bus routes will be developed during the summer.
