Some reward.

After winning its playoff opener last weekend, the Shorecrest boys soccer team ran into Squalicum and Sehome — the two teams that met in the finals of last season’s state tournament.

Shorecrest (10-5-3 overall) was scheduled to face reigning state champion Sehome last night in a loser-out contest. The winner advances to a winner-to-state matchup at 1 p.m. May 17 at Civic Field in Bellingham.

Shorecrest topped Sehome, the Northwest 3A League’s second-palce finisher, 1-0 in a preseason game March 19.

Defending district champion Squalicum edged the Scots 1-0 in Tuesday night’s semifinals. Junior forward Dylan Gottier netted the only goal from 10 yards out in the 36th minute off a deflected pass from Kenneth Grey.

Goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins nearly blocked the shot, but the ball trickled across for the game’s only score.

“He almost had it, but it was just too hard of a shot,” Scots coach Teddy Mitalas said. “We had our chances too. If we’d have put more power on our shots, I think we could have scored.”

To advance to the double-elimination portion of the six-team tournament, the Scots ousted Sedro-Woolley 3-1 May 10 at Shoreline Stadium.

Senior midfielder Craig Peterson bent a corner kick in for a goal less than two minutes in, then assisted on Michael Dwyer’s goal in the 15th minute.

Three minutes later, midfielder Taylor Starkey converted a pass from Jason Jakubiak to give Shorecrest a 3-0 advantage.
