Scots look to newcomers

Shorecrest lost two valuable seniors, Marco Dehmel and David Ehrlichman, last season, but the combination of an experienced coach and returning players should help the Scots make it through the season.

Dehmel never lost a match and triumphed as No. 1 in both singles and districts before qualifying for state. Ehrlichmean took first place at districts in doubles before advancing to state.

Coach Barry Majorowicz worked with boys tennis teams for seven years after coaching girls tennis for more than a decade.

His strategy to help his boys improve their technique is through practice.

“I had a college coach who told me that a player must hit 10,000 balls before a stroke can be claimed as his/her own,” he said.

His two stand-out newcomers are Ricardo Cellis and Hiro Tanaka. Both players are exchange students.

This season’s returning players include: Matt LaCourse, Jason Hollenback-Landraitos, Brian Sharkey, Peter Olson, Ray Dalton, Cole Uppinghouse, Mike Uppinghouse, Nathan Bright, Doug Jambor, Nathan Mass and Max Reikosky.

The team’s strengths lie in their experience playing competitively and in their depth, Majorowicz said.

The team suffered a minor setback when four players weren’t eligible to compete at the beginning of the season.

“As the players become eligible … the depth will show,” Majorowicz said.
